Captain Nobre is reading the traditional Catholic Prayer for Burial at Sea. I had originally planned for Maelzel to be sent off with his chessboard, but I later found that it actually still exists, at the Library Company of Philadelphia, which has a small cache of Maelzel's belongings. LCP was kind enough to send me a photograph of it, so that's how I knew how it looked when I drew it on Page 2.
Also, an apology to any actual sailors or shipbuilders out there... I totally deleted the mainsail's boom from this page. It should be bisecting the panels, and hanging pretty low over the quarterdeck, but then you wouldn't be able to see the people gathered there -- or at least not all of them at once. Believe me, I tried to get it on there, but it just didn't fit. Artistic license, what can I say?
