August 14, 2008 -- Real Achievements

Anthon is right -- by this time, word of the automaton was spreading all over Europe. Articles appeared in newspapers in London and Paris, as well as several others across the continent. This was the source of some embarrassment for von Kempelen, because as seen in last week's page, he really did consider it a parlor trick, albeit a very well-crafted, sophisticated, elegant parlor-trick.

In other news, I can finally start moving forward with the other fun project I've been meaning to tackle for a while now: The TinyTurk. Yes, I'm planning on making a 6:1 scale model of The Turk to bring with me to conventions. It'll be as accurate as I can make it, though it may not be a perfect replica (I imagine getting a tiny little doll's hand to open and close on command is gonna be tough) but it'll be a fun departure from the 2-D work. I absolutely adore working in 3-D, and almost never get the chance; I made scale models of Vögelein and the Duskie that turned out really well, but they photograph terribly, so I've never put them on the website. Other than that, I don't get much opportunity to sculpt, so this will be a lot of fun.

The plan is to start a separate blog and post updates every couple of weeks on the progress. It'll probably be another month or two before I get it going for real, but I'll post a link to it as soon as it's up.
